Solar Energy Systems: How They Work.

The sun is already expelling huge amounts of energy, which is exactly why you should put it to use in your home. With the Lennox® SunSource® Energy System we carry at Bormida Mechanical Services Inc in Springfield, you can limit your dependence on oil and gas and lower your utility bills.

But how does it change from sunlight to energy?

The most basic way to explain a solar energy system is that the system uses solar modules made of photovoltaic (PV) cells to gather energy from the sun and convert it to electricity. This electricity powers light, appliances and electrical devices in your home.

Grid-tied PV systems

Grid-tied PV systems are very common and the most affordable for residential applications. The SunSource Energy System we offer is grid-tied, meaning it’s connected to your utility company’s power grid or power stations. Grid-tied lets you use your solar energy system to power your home. When the system isn’t generating electricity, your home will be able to use power through the utility grid.

In addition, when your system produces enough to power your home and then some, it will be fed back into the grid through the process of net-metering. With net-metering, your meter spins forward if you’re using electricity from the grid and backward when you’re SunSource System’s electricity is going back into the grid.

*Note: Most rebates and incentives that make a solar energy system easier to afford are only available when your system is grid-tied.

Stand-alone PV systems are another option for those in remote areas without utility service, however they’re much more expensive. A stand-alone system is not linked to a utility grid and provide for a home’s entire energy consumption.
