Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump relies on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s sent back through your home. This liquid is housed within the coils of your home’s cooling system, but one of the most widely used refrigerants used for many, many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being phased out in response to environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, the production of R-22 will end all together. Introducing R-410A Chlorine-free and ozone-friendly, R-410A is recognized by the EPA. This means it will keep your home cool without hurting the environment. Additionally, Lennox’s most efficient systems are made to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system operate efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for durability, quiet operation and better dehumidification, so you’ll stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Bormida Mechanical Services Inc in Springfield, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If you have a system that was made prior to 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is completely phased out. Some manufacturers carry alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
